( NewsNation ) — September 17 is National Voter Registration Day.
With the 2024 general election fast approaching on Nov. 5, many Americans will check their voter registration to avoid potential confusion at the polls and look to vote early to avoid Election Day lines.
Judge orders Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to be held without bail on sex trafficking, racketeering charges Alabama does not offer early voting, but Tennessee does provide an early voting window, which you can read more about below. The early voting windows vary by state, with some states like Minnesota opening in-person and absentee voting as early as Sept. 20.
Here’s a look at how to register to vote and how to check your registration status in your state, as well as how to check for your polling location ahead of the election.
Alabama
Alabama’s voter registration deadline is Oct. 21.

Absentee voting began Sept. 11 in Alabama.
The Secretary of State’s office says that absentee ballot applications delivered by mail must be received in the office of the Absentee Election Manager for your county no later than 7 days before the election.
An absentee ballot returned by mail should be delivered to the Absentee Election Manager no later than noon on election day.

Tennessee
Tennessee’s voter registration deadline for the general election is Oct. 7.
Early voting in Tennessee is from Oct. 16 to Oct. 31.
To register to vote in Tennessee:
- Submit the Tennessee voter registration application electronically
- Print the TennesseeVoter Registration form to complete and sign. Send the completed form by mail to your county election commission .
- Register to vote in person at your local County Election Commission Offices, County Clerk’s Offices, Public Libraries, Register of Deeds Offices or during a transaction with one of the following agencies: Department of Health (WIC program), Department of Human Services, Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Department of Mental Health, Department of Safety (motor vehicles division) and Department of Veteran’s Affairs

As for absentee ballot in the state of Tennessee, voters can request a by-mail ballot by submitting an application no later than seven days before the election.
The county election commission must receive your absentee ballot by mail (USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.) no later than the close of polls on election day.
You must mail your ballot in time for your county election commission to receive it no later than the close of polls on Election Day.
