ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — To say the Golden Eagles are soaring right now would be very accurate.

They’re off to a 4-0 start, the best the program has seen since 2006.

To put that in perspective, a huge portion of the current Athens roster wasn’t even born in 2006.

That’s how long ago that successful year was.

Now, Athens got a 30-point win over region opponent Jasper in week four which head coach Cody Gross dubbed the team’s most complete offensive performance.

And they are the week four Tyler Mann Team of the Week.

“Well, there was a lot to like last week and we’re nowhere near where we need to be. But that was the most complete game we played,” Athens’ head coach Cody Gross said. “To this point, I thought the defense continues to swarm the ball. I thought offensively we finally started fast. We, finished drives. We had some explosive plays on the offensive line as a whole. Played well. And we didn’t have to punt. So I mean, that’s pretty good. When you don’t have to punt.”

“I don’t know if you guys keep up with Alabama football a lot, but, I feel like we’re kind of like them last year,” Athens junior kicker Connor Johnstone said. “You know, they started off rough against Texas, and, you know, they kind of had to build their, their way up throughout the year and, you know, be resilient. And I feel like that’s kind of how we are. You know, people kind of wrote us off after Mae Jemison. But, you know, we’re just steadily climbing and, you know, we’re looking to improve every week.”

“It’s a fun team to coach. they love each other. It’s evident in the way that they play. I had a supporter today in town who came by, and he was talking about how you just. There’s a feel in the stadium that they’re a close knit group, and it really is like they play extremely hard. It’s different guys stepping up and they play as a team,” said coach Gross.

Athens will look to keep their winning ways going.

They host Hazel Green on Friday.
