DECATUR, Ala. ( WHNT ) — As Hurricane Helene continues to strengthen over the Gulf, North Alabama is doing what it can to help.

“We’ve got a team in Alabama ready to go,” said Cody Michael. “They can leave as early as tomorrow morning.”

Project Unity is an evangelist group that specializes in disaster relief. As soon as they heard rumors of a hurricane, they sprung into action.

“We’ll make sure every trailer has everything it needs,” he said. “Every truck has everything it needs.”

Cody Michael serves as one of the team leaders. In addition to a crew in Alabama, they have help coming in from Oklahoma as well.

“We’ve got a team from Oklahoma that are on their way to North Alabama, and they’ll stay here with us through Monday,” he said. “Then once the team that goes down first needs a rotate out, then the rest of us will come down and we’ll twist out with them.”

Michael said they’ve spent the past three days purchasing generators, gassing up heavy machinery, and packing nonperishable items.

“A lot of our prep work goes into making sure that all of our chainsaws are running good, making sure we get our generators fired up, make sure they’re ready and running well,” he said. “I don’t want to get somewhere and not be able to get us all started, or have a generator that won’t start to help somebody’s home.”

They are also bringing a cooking trailer to prepare food for those without power.

“We can cook for the linemen as well as families that don’t have electricity,” he said. “So, we can go down and we can set up an entire kitchen and we can cook for hundreds of people at a time and be able to provide for them any needs they have.”

The group plans to head to the Tallahassee, Perry, and Cedar Key areas of Florida.

They are asking for your prayers, donations, and any nonperishable food items that they can take with them. You can find all the details on how to help them on their website .
