HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Members of the Huntsville City Council passed a record-setting fiscal year budget for 2025 topping $328 million dollars.

City leaders are calling it a balanced budget that will support the city’s operations and other significant areas.

Funding of course will cover the basics from city departments to non-profit organizations throughout Huntsville, and city leaders feel they’re investing taxpayer dollars in areas that will directly benefit the community.

Millions of dollars are going into road resurfacing and several other initiatives such as infrastructural projects. That includes the continuation of the Northern Bypass Project creating a circular-like concept in the center of Huntsville that’ll help alleviate traffic.

Affordable housing has become the center of attention in recent years and Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling says the budget will reflect how they’re focusing on that area more than ever.

“We’re looking at some innovation as far as zoning that would take place that would allow for more affordable housing in existing neighborhoods,” Kling said. “Over in the Lowe Mill neighborhood, there’s a large development that’s going to be built it’s going to be largely mixed use but there’s going to be a large component of affordable housing in it.”

The city is expected to bring in nearly $40 million more than it will spend in 2025.

Kling says a 2% cost of living adjustment for city workers is also part of the funding. Although they couldn’t fulfill all funding requests, Kling did say there was some flexibility and they could always go back and see if there is some extra money at a later date.

The budget will go into effect on October 1st and a full breakdown of the complete budget can be found here .
