HARTSELLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Bert Newton has served as a defensive coordinator since 2009, but 2024 is his first year as the head coach of the Hartselle program.

And that defensive mind and experience is certainly showing as of late.

Week Four Tyler Mann Team of the Week: Athens Golden Eagles

The Tigers have not allowed a single point since week zero.

They’ve outscored their opponents 207-0 in the past four games, and the last time the Tigers had four consecutive shutout wins was in 1921.

And they are the Week Five Tyler Mann Team of the Week.

“I like about how fast they played and how they play. and, like, they’ve been really consistent in the scheme of, of not giving up anything big. and realize what their job is and doing their job was,” said coach Newton. “The short fields are a big thing. We played, I would say, 90% of the game the last four weeks on our side of the 50, it seems like at least, maybe, maybe. I bet that’s close. But, so, you know, the short field is a big thing because when you cross that 50-yard line, you get about one more first down and then you’re caught on territory, so it changes everything. so it’s been it’s been big for them, but our offense is pretty good too now.”

Week Three Tyler Mann Team of the Week: Scottsboro Wildcats

“We’re scoring quickly, whenever you just can throw the ball up and trust that they can make every play for you. we’re just beating teams in the first half and getting out of the game healthy. And it’s been really fun It’s so rewarding. I mean, it’s so nice,” said Hartselle senior quarterback Noah Lee.

“I mean, it feels good for us to not have to really worry now, and they’re [the offense] going to go out there and put points on the board knowing we can go out there and show people how we just we play really, really well as a team. And just coming out here working every day. I mean, we know that when we go out there on Fridays, that. I mean, we’re just going to do what we’ve been coached to do, and we work on it all the time out here. So we just got each other’s back out there really,” said Hartselle senior defensive end Porter Simmons.
