SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — A Jackson County man given a second chance at life is still looking at a long road to recovery, and his co-workers and the rest of Scottsboro are helping him on that journey.

After a diagnosis of kidney disease and congestive heart failure, Colby Gann was not a stranger to hospitals, but in August, his doctor found something that needed immediate action.

“She found out his heart was only working at 5% during an echo,” Julie Crowell, Gann’s sister-in-law. “She said, ‘That can’t be right. We’ll do another echo.’ Turns out it was right.”

Gann’s family said he is doing well after a heart and kidney transplant. His community is still looking for ways to help.

As maintenance director, Gann is a familiar face to those who work at the Jackson County courthouse. His co-workers said he is more than a boss. He is a friend.

On Friday, co-workers, family and friends met at the courthouse to celebrate Gann’s recovery so far, pray for the future and find a way to support him. Many contributed to the bake sale.

“Everybody from the courthouse chipped in and brought the baked goods,” said Gann’s co-worker Jacqueline Barragan.

The sale raised more than five thousand dollars.

“We’re just proud to be a part of his solution,” said Desiree Forester, another co-worker of Gann’s.

The recovery process has included moments of celebration. Gann has been released from Vanderbilt Medical Center, but the journey is far from over.

“We love Colby,” said co-worker Donna Grider. “We’re constantly praying. I’m asking don’t stop praying now, he still has a long recovery to go.”

Gann will stay near Nashville for the next few months for medical follow-ups.

“The amount of love and the outpour, it’s just been insane,” Crowell said. “We’re very grateful for it.”

Another fundraising event that will include music, an auction and activities for kids is planned for November 2 at Section Park.
