Former Lauderdale County jail employee indicted for computer tampering

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — A former Lauderdale County Detention Center employee was indicted for computer tampering and theft of property Tuesday.

On October 4, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office arrested former Lauderdale County Detention Center Administrative Assistant Chantelle Genice Brown.

Brown was indicted on October 8 for 60 counts of computer tampering and one count of first-degree theft of property.

In November 2023, it was reported to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office that money was missing from an account of inmate funds held by Turn Key Correctional Banking System for Lauderdale County Detention Center Inmates.

The sheriff’s office said it started an investigation and discovered Brown to be the primary suspect in the missing money.

Once the sheriff’s office found this out, the investigation was turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations.

Brown was booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center and has since been let out on a bond of $180,000.

Brown was featured in the Netflix documentary “Jailbreak: Love on the Run” which tells the story of a former corrections employee, Vickey White, who fell in love with an inmate, Casey White. On April 29, 2022, authorities sent out an alert to the public and local media outlets saying a capital murder suspect and a jailer were missing from the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

This alert led to an 11-day manhunt for the pair with local and federal agencies on a frantic hunt all the way to Indiana.
