WINSTON, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Winston County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy Sunday night for driving under the influence, a Lawrence County spokesperson confirmed.

Around 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 6, a deputy with the Winston County Sheriff’s Office stopped Steven Curtis. WCSO determined Curtis was driving an LCSO vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Former Tuscumbia police officer sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter

According to witnesses, Curtis hit a mailbox in Winston County and left the scene.

Curtis was off-duty at the time of the incident and Lawrence County Chief Deputy Brian Covington said he should not have been driving the vehicle while off-duty.

He was booked into the Winston County Jail, but bonded out. The sheriff’s office said he was fired after he posted bond.
