Madison County man charged after child dies from meth overdose

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man who they believe is responsible for the death of a 3-month-old child in March.

According to a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office, Sonny Summers Jr. is charged with chemical endangerment of a child that resulted in the child’s death.

On March 10, sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a child in cardiac arrest on Butter & Egg Road in Hazel Green. HEMSI along with Madison County Fire were on the scene attempting to save the child’s life, but those attempts were not successful.

In September, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science contacted the sheriff’s office with the toxicology report for the child, that report showed that there was a deadly amount of methamphetamine in the infant’s system at the time of death.

MCSO said Summers was using methamphetamine around the infant and then caring for the child after using the drug.

Summers is being held at the Madison County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
