HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) arrested an 8th-grade student at McNair who they say attempted to bring multiple guns to school, a spokesperson told News 19 Wednesday.

According to HPD, the McNair Junior High campus security team discovered the weapons during the morning screening process using the weapon detection system.

Authorities said Huntsville School Security and Huntsville Police School Resource Officers were in the immediate area at the time. After discovering the weapons, the student was stopped immediately without incident.

The department said that school security conducted a search of the child’s backpack and two handguns were recovered inside.

HPD said they could not disclose the age or grade of the student due to him being a minor.

A Huntsville City School Spokesperson said the 8th-grade student was taken into custody after the firearms were found.

The school system said the student was removed from campus and will not be returning to school. The system said bringing weapons to school carries serious disciplinary consequences.

The school’s administration said that additional security was on hand throughout the school day.
