MADISON COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — Monrovia Volunteer Fire and Rescue recently purchased a Starlink satellite to support first responders.

MVFR officials said that they learned of how first responders in Western North Carolina lost communication with one another dealing with the aftermath of the recent hurricanes.

According to MVFR, the technology enables the drone team to stream live video from the aircraft to responders for enhanced situational awareness, while also serving as either a fixed communications platform to support the station or in a mobile capacity in a scenario where communications are lost.

MVFR said that their department receives and responds to over 2,500 Fire/Rescue and medical emergency calls every year.
