HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — Three local companies are set to participate in a medication takeback event to impact the opioid epidemic in Madison County.

On October 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, people can visit three locations to drop off unused or unwanted medications.

This event is to help prevent drug overdoses, both accidental and purposeful, as well as to keep the chemicals in these drugs from getting into public water systems.

The Drug Enforcement Administration said this day reflects how the organization wants to help the public remove unneeded medications from homes to prevent misuse.

The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat.

DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.
