LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The North Alabama Zoological Society outlined its next steps towards bringing a zoo to North Alabama during a town hall at its third annual kids festival Saturday.

During the town hall, NALZS executive director Ethan Woodruff explained the society’s hope to put the zoo’s future on a special ballot sometime next summer, allowing the Limestone County community to vote on the matter.

‘In order to do that in the State of Alabama that requires a bill to be passed in the next session of the legislature,” said Woodruff. “Once that bill is passed, it would enable a special ballot sometime next summer where people would be available to vote on the zoo.”

Woodruff said that the zoo is a community project and therefore should be left to the community to decide where it goes from here. He also said it is important for the society to get in front of the community.

“This is meant to be a community zoo. One of the confusions has been that this is a private effort,” said Woodruff. “This isn’t a private effort, we are a non-profit and what we are proposing is a public zoo and we want as much of the community involvement as possible.”

It appears that few in the county are willing to fund this project.

This has been discussed several times. Citizens of Limestone Co do NOT want to be taxed if pay for a nonprofit zoo. If we have to pay are we getting lifetime free passes? The answer to that is a big fat NO WAY. If North Alabama Zoological Society wants a zoo look elsewhere. All the citizens comments I saw said no the citizens do not want to pay funding for a zoo. Have one like Birmingham or Nashville where the zoo funds itself.
