Parker Fenton, 19, is being held in the Polk County Jail on charges of eluding, OWI, controlled substance violation, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple traffic violations connected to the incident.

Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said the pursuit began with an attempted traffic stop at 7:21 p.m. According to the criminal complaint, an officer tried to pull Fenton over at E.14th St. and University Ave. after noticing him driving at a high rate of speed and passing a vehicle in the middle turn lane.

After the officer activated lights and sirens, the complaint said Fenton accelerated westbound on University Avenue going more than 70 mph in a 35 mph zone in an attempt to escape. The chase ended when Fenton’s vehicle rear-ended another vehicle near Ohio Street.

According to the complaint, Fenton was found with seven individually wrapped baggies of marijuana in his possession.

Fenton was transported to the hospital before he was booked into the Polk County Jail later Wednesday night.

Medics on the scene treated the driver of the other vehicle for minor injuries.
