DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says the state’s first case of West Nile virus infection this year has been reported in an older adult in western Iowa.

HHS announced the information Thursday, saying the case was confirmed in an adult between the ages of 61 and 80 from Harrison County.

Humans bitten by West Nile-infected mosquitoes can contract the virus. While some people who are infected may not experience any symptoms, HHS says others may have minor fevers and mild headaches.

The virus can also cause serious symptoms like high fever, severe headache, disorientation, and muscle weakness that require immediate medical attention.

HHS recommends using an insect repellant with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, Para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535 to lower the risk of mosquito bites.

HHS says 17 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus in 2023, and one death was reported.
