Forecast: the heat is on

We began a hotter trend today that will take us into at least Tuesday in central Iowa. A heat advisory goes into effect Sunday afternoon and will likely be repeated on Monday.

The jetstream configuration has changed since Friday, and a ridge over the middle of the country is allowing hot air to pour north across the Plains, as seen below.

Lows tonight will stay quite warm, foreshadowing Sunday heat. Be careful outside the next few days!

Storm chances start to increase in central Iowa Tuesday, with the best chances coming Wednesday and Thursday. The severe weather risks aren’t great due to the setup of winds aloft in the atmosphere, but the rain and eventual cooler highs will be welcome.

It appears relief is on the way, starting as we head into next weekend and lasting through at least the first week of September.
