DES MOINES, Iowa — Monday is the first day of school for Des Moines Public Schools’ preschools. New this year is a pilot program to provide transportation for preschoolers to select schools.

Kristin Rourke, the Director of Early Childhood Programs for Des Moines Public Schools, said that the new program will help more kids attend preschool.

“We are piloting transportation this year. We know that transportation is a big barrier for families in getting their children to preschool throughout the community,” Rourke said.

Rourke said that DMPS has been tracking the academic success of students who attended preschool with the district and that students who attend preschool are more successful throughout grades K-12.

Emily Kurimski, a DMPS preschool teacher, said she is excited for students to start the year.

“We are headed in the right direction to really build up early childhood. Everyone can see how important it is getting students into preschool. We’ve heard the impact that it has not just in K-12 but for the rest of their lives so we are heading in the right direction in that we want more preschoolers enrolled, more programs available, and transportation so we can get kids in the door,” Kurimski said.
