KOSSUTH COUNTY, Iowa — Two people were sent to hospitals after their home exploded Monday morning.

At around 9 a.m. the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a house explosion in the 600 block of 110th Street, southeast of West Bend. The sheriff’s office said the caller stated there was debris all over the yard and roadway.

When first responders arrived on scene they found 44-year-old Catherine Fleischhacker inside the home underneath debris. Fleischhacker was removed from the home and transported to an Algona hospital, but was later transported via air ambulance to a hospital in Mason City. Her condition is not known at this time.

Brett Lanning, 21, was also inside the home when the explosion occurred. The sheriff’s office said Lanning was able to crawl out from under the debris on his own and was transported to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to assist in the investigation, and to help determine the cause of the explosion. There are no concerns for the public’s safety from this incident, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Kossuth and Humboldt County Emergency Management, the West Bend Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
