WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Demolition of a historic building in Valley Junction has begun.

6,500 Iowa households receive $63M in Individual Assistance so far

Earlier this year the building at 122 5th Street was deemed structurally unsafe and would need to be torn down. The 130-year-old building was last occupied by The Longest Yard, a sports bar, but has been vacant for the past two years. The Historic Valley Junction Foundation, as well as neighboring businesses, say the property turned into an eyesore.

Once demolition is complete the new owners of the property plan to build a new building that keeps the historic vibe, and eventually open a restaurant and bar .
