POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a house fire in rural Polk County Wednesday night.

The home is in the 11,000 block of northwest 150th Avenue, north of Polk City and southeast of Madrid. Crews responded to a report of flames coming from the basement a little before 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Because of the fire’s rural location, firefighters rushed tanks of water to the scene. After half an hour fighting the flames, crews issued a second alarm, requesting help from surrounding fire departments.

Polk City Fire Chief Karla Hogrefe told WHO 13 that the home’s rural location made fighting the blaze a challenge.

“So, we struggle with water supply out in the country. There’s no hydrants out here. So, I believe our closest hydrant was actually in Madrid which I believe we’re four to six miles away from Madrid right now. So, we had to have multiple tankers come with about a thousand to two thousand gallon tanks,” said Hogrefe.

No one was injured in this incident, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
