WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — A new centerpiece sculpture was just unveiled at the World War I memorial in Washington, D.C.

The moment was nearly a decade in the making. Dubbed ‘A Soldier’s Journey’ the sculpture is a nearly 60-foot-long wall of bronze created by artist Sabin Howard.

“The culmination of 9 1/2 years,” Howard said. “History comes alive with the story, because story basically unifies us.”

Howard says he designed it to tell the story of an American soldier.  He used veterans as human models to design and create the piece.

“It is a sculpture for the people. And that to me, gets me out of bed every day,” Howard said.

From design to Congressional approval, to fundraising, one of the project leaders, Edwin Fountain, says it’s taken a lot of work to get to this moment.

“It has been an incredible rewarding challenge,” Fountain said.

Howard says the sculpture was created with the general public in mind. He hopes everyone who comes to see it gets something meaningful from it.

“It brings us together. And under that flag, they were neither Democrats or Republicans, they were Americans that went off to battle,” Howard said.

“While this is a World War I memorial, it speaks very timelessly to veterans of all generations,” Fountain said.
