DES MOINES, Iowa — The City of Des Moines on Friday said a popular East Village music venue is no longer at risk of losing its liquor license.

According to Axios , a zoning enforcement officer recommended that the Zoning Board of Adjustment take away Wooly’s liquor license due to noise levels exceeding the city’s decibel limits around the venue. Josh Ivey, co-owner of Wooly’s, told the Des Moines Register that if the venue was no longer able to sell alcohol it would have to shutter its doors.

Wooly’s has been providing Des Moines with live music for 12 years. As news of the proposal spread fans began rallying behind the venue, writing emails and calling the city and the board to reverse course.

On Friday, the City of Des Moines announced that Wooly’s liquor license was no longer at risk and that a solution was reached between all the parties involved.

As the capital city, our downtown is home to diverse industries. We are a city where people work, live and play, and all industries help create the culture that makes Des Moines a thriving community. Our municipal code is designed to be fair and balanced, creating an environment where everyone can succeed.

The intent was never to shut down Wooly’s. They, like all Des Moines local businesses, are essential in creating an environment that attracts residents and visitors alike. We sat down with the parties involved and reached a solution that respects the interests of both our local businesses and residents. As a result, the item regarding Wooly’s has been removed from the upcoming Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting. Additionally, the City will be convening a group of music industry experts and city staff to review and make recommendations to refine the City’s sound-related ordinances associated with the music venues. We value the businesses in our community and look forward to their continued success in the City of Des Moines.
