    DMPD officers shot after chase, crash continue recovery

    DES MOINES, Iowa — On Tuesday the Des Moines Police Department said the two officers who were shot following a chase and crash early Monday morning are continuing to recover.

    Early Monday morning officers with the Des Moines Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard. According to police, the driver of the vehicle stopped in a parking lot but then sped off and eventually crashed after turning north onto East 24th Street. Officers instructed the driver to get out of the vehicle, but the driver refused multiple times, leading officers to deploy a Taser , police said.

    During the struggle of trying to get the driver out of the vehicle, the driver pulled out a gun began shooting at the officers. According to police, three officers returned fire and shot the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.

    Two of the officers involved suffered gunshot wounds. One was shot in the arm and the other in the head, police said. Both were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

    On Tuesday police said that the officer shot in the arm has been released from the hospital. The second officer remains in the hospital in critical, but stable condition.

    The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation along with the Des Moines Police Department are continuing to investigate this incident. More information will be released when made available.
