Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said officers responded to the 1500 block of Guthrie Avenue around 3:48 a.m. after receiving a report of a drive-by shooting. Mortale was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed and led officers on a pursuit that ended when he crashed into the median on I-80 near the Mitchellville rest stop.

After investigating the scene of the original call at Guthrie Avenue, Sgt. Parizek said no evidence of gunfire was located.

The investigation into the incident continues.
