    Johnston Middle School student in custody after report of weapon on campus

    JOHNSTON, Iowa — The Johnston Middle School went into lockdown Thursday afternoon after someone reported seeing a weapon in a bathroom.

    According to an email from the Johnston Community School District, the middle school went on lockdown at 2:48 p.m. after a weapon was reportedly to be in an upstairs restroom; no weapon was found. The lockdown was in place until 3:08 p.m., which is about 18 minutes after regular dismissal time, when the all-clear was given.

    The Johnston Police Department now has a student in custody.

    The district said school administrators and the police department are working together to investigate the incident.

    We are taking this situation very seriously and continue to work with the Johnston Police Department on this matter. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We applaud our students and staff for continuing to speak up and share information.
