Classes to be held as normal Friday at Johnston Middle School

JOHNSTON, Iowa — Following a lockdown that took place Thursday afternoon at Johnston Middle School, the Johnston Superintendent announced that classes will be held as normal on Friday.

The Johnston Police Department was called to Johnston Middle School at 2:45 p.m. on a report of a weapon in an upstairs bathroom. A thorough search was conducted by Johnston PD and school administrators, but no weapon was found. The school entered a lockdown that lasted from 2:48 p.m. to 3:08 p.m.

According to police, the student reported to be involved was identified and taken into custody.

Classes at Johnston Middle School will be held as normal on Friday and there will be an additional police presence within the district.

Johnston School Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda released the following statement:

We recognize that being in a lockdown can be unsettling and even scary for students. We want all our students and their families to know that their safety remains our highest priority and we continue to take every measure to ensure that our school is a secure environment for learning. We will have extra staff members in our counseling office tomorrow available to meet with any student who would like to visit with someone about their experience. If you have any worries or concerns regarding your student, please do not hesitate to contact their school counselor.
