DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was arrested Thursday night after Des Moines police responded to a report of gunfire heard in the 900 block of Oakridge Drive just before 10:30 p.m.

As officers were responding, multiple calls to 911 came in reporting a large fight and multiple people shooting within the apartment complex in the Oakridge Neighborhood, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department.

When officers arrived at the complex, they found a large and unruly crowd. While investigating, officers saw 34-year-old Dewayne Robinson had a handgun tucked into his waistband. Robinson was taken into custody and officers seized the gun. Sgt. Parizek said it was loaded with an extended ammunition magazine.

“When the officers got there, there was a large crowd, mostly juveniles were pretty unruly, taunting the officers,” said Sgt. Paul Parizek, of the Des Moines Police Department. “They were trying to look and see if there were any victims or any damage and what they found was when apartment had been hit by gunfire also a fence.”

Parizek said officers were called to Oakridge earlier this month.

“It’s really not reflective of the families that are up there just trying to live their lives and do right by their kids,” said Parizek. “They’ve got some great leadership up there so we’re just trying to help them out and do what we can help keep it safe.”

As officers continued to investigate the report of shots fired, they located another gun abandoned on the ground.

    The incident remains under investigation.
