DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man is behind bars after a dog in his care was found seizing from heat stroke in July.

According to court documents, on July 15th at around 12:15 pm, a male dog was found actively seizing in the yard at a home in the 1200 block of 12th Street. The dog, named Master, was immediately transported to an animal hospital for treatment. An evaluation of Master found that his internal body temperature at the time was around 112 degrees, and that the seizures were caused by heat stroke, court documents state. Master couldn’t be saved and was euthanized.

Anthony Delano Bruce, 59, was caring for Master at the time while his girlfriend, Master’s owner, was out of town, according to a criminal complaint. Master was left outside without adequate shelter or access to enough water, the complaint states.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest temperature recorded on July 15 for the Des Moines area was 95 degrees.

Bruce was arrested on Thursday and charged with animal neglect with serious injury or death. He is currently being held at the Polk County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 7.
