MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A popular diner in Marshalltown closed its doors unexpectedly in mid-September after the co-managers were impacted by a medical event.

Doo Dah’s Diner on East Main Street was a popular breakfast spot in the town.

Manager Jack Brimmer was found unresponsive in his home on September 13th. He was life-flighted to St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids.

Since then, he has woken up and is expected to get better, but he doesn’t have health insurance. His girlfriend and co-manager, Samara Torres, is helping him during his recovery. They are both unable to work and the diner was forced to close.

This is all according to a GoFundMe , which was established for the couple to help with the cost of food, travel, and medical expenses.

Despite going through a difficult time, they still put their community first. They donated all of their leftover food supplies to the Marshalltown Salvation Army to help feed the homeless. The Marshalltown Salvation Army said they received four freezers worth of food.

Marshalltown residents Lora Braudis and Rick Abney both said they were saddened to hear about the diner’s closure.

“It was crowded when we went. We went on a Sunday morning, I think, and it was crowded. But it was worth the wait. The food was great. The pancakes were like that big, so we’re sad that they closed,” said Braudis.

“I liked the blueberry pancakes. I hate they closed because I live right upstairs and I used to come around and get breakfast sometime,” said Abney.
