DES MOINES, Iowa — Drake University confirmed on Friday that an attempted abduction of a student was reported on campus earlier this week.

According to university officials, a student reported to Drake Public Safety that an attempted abduction took place on the west side of campus overnight Wednesday. Officials said the student who reported the incident wasn’t the victim and wasn’t involved in the alleged attempted abduction.

School officials said Drake Public Safety was able to confirm the reported timeline of the attempted abduction and the vehicle reported to be involved. However, DPS was unable to identify what make and model the vehicle was or a license plate number. The Des Moines Police Department is waiting for an official report from the student who is believed to be involved, officials said.

The university released a statement on Friday about the incident, which says in part:

The safety of our campus community is our top priority and a fundamental component of our mission. We are focused on ensuring the appropriate people and systems are in place to protect the campus community. Our Emergency Management team is assessing this current situation, evaluating all current steps taken and resources in place, and providing additional information to the campus community as it becomes available.

Students and staff on campus can expect an increased presence of off-duty Des Moines Police Officers overnight Friday and Saturday. The university also encourages those on campus to utilize the Safe Ride bus and RAVE Guardian app.
