ADAIR COUNTY, Iowa — Crews are working to restore safe drinking water to some communities in Adair County after a water main break on Monday.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says residents in Greenfield, Fontanelle, and Orient are under a boil advisory because of the issue.

The DNR says a contractor hit a main near the Greenfield city water tower on Monday around 4:00 p.m., resulting in pressure loss and damage to several other secondary main breaks. After repairs are made the area will be disinfected and flushed.

Any tap water that will be used for food preparation or consumed needs to be boiled for at least two minutes and then allowed to cool before use. You can use tap water for showering, laundry, and outdoor use without boiling it.

The DNR says the boil advisory will be lifted when samples test negative for bacteria.
