DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Fire Department battled a house fire on the southeast side of the city on Thursday.

At around 2:25 p.m. Thursday the fire department responded to 911 calls stating there was a house on fire in the 4300 block of SE 15th Court. When firefighters arrived on scene they found smoke and flames coming from a home.

The fire department said that the flames coming from the house were so large at times that they had to call firefighters out of the home multiple times for safety.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the fire department believes the fire started at the back of the house.

No injuries occurred during the fire, but the department said one person was transported to a hospital for non-emergent reasons.

One neighbor who lived a couple houses up saw the flames when he got back to his house from running errands. He walked down to the household when he was informed there could still be another dog in the house. He proceeded to go open the front door and try to call for the dog. The man described to WHO 13 News what he saw.

“It was definitely. It was fully engulfed when I went down to see if I could help get the animals out and it was fully involved. At that point I opened the door. They thought there was a dog inside and is kneeling down calling for the dog, and you couldn’t see two foot inside the door at that point already,” said Darwin Wagner, from Des Moines.

It appeared the owner was reunited with the dog a couple minutes later. Four individuals and three dogs live in the household, it is not confirmed how many were in the house at the time of the fire.
