Man rescued from roof of burning home in Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE, Iowa — Firefighters rescued a man who was trapped on the roof of a burning home in Fort Dodge early Wednesday morning.

At around 4:26 a.m. Fort Dodge Fire Rescue responded to a report of a house fire in the 200 block of South 16th Street. When firefighters arrived on scene they found flames shooting out of the first floor windows on the backside of the house and an adult male trapped on the roof.

According to Ford Dodge Fire Rescue, the man was trying to escape the fire from a second floor window when he became trapped on the roof. Fire crews were able to rescue the man via a ladder. Three other individuals were able to escape from the home on their own.

Two of the occupants who were inside the house suffered from serious smoke inhalation and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fort Dodge Fire Rescue said one of the victims has been transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics due to the severity of the injuries.

After firefighters were able to knock out the fire they conducted several searches of the home. During those searches they found two dogs who had died during the fire.

According to Fort Dodge Fire Rescue the kitchen and porch area sustained severe fire damage, while the rest of the home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
