    Explosive device investigation leads to 2nd arrest

    DES MOINES, Iowa — The investigation into an arson and explosive device placed in a vehicle on Des Moines’ southeast side earlier this week has resulted in a second arrest.

    Timothy Hellmers, 34, is now charged with first-degree arson and possession of an incendiary or explosive device with intent according to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department. He was located at a residence in the 2100 block of Capitol Avenue Thursday night and taken into custody without incident.

    Sgt. Parizek said Timothy Hellmers is the brother of Daniel Hellmers, who was previously arrested in the case . He is charged with first-degree arson and possession of an incendiary or explosive device with intent and also faces felon in possession of a firearm and drug charges.

    The arrests of the brothers stem from an investigation into a report of a vehicle fire in the 1200 block of Hartford Avenue early Tuesday morning. Investigators determined the damage had been caused by an improvised explosive device and it was a targeted incident.

    Des Moines police detectives and ATF agents learned the owner of the vehicle that was damaged by the explosive device was Daniel Hellmers’ former roommate.

    Sgt. Parizek said no other arrests are expected in connection to the investigation.

    Daniel Hellmers and Timothy Hellmers are being held in the Polk County Jail.
