A candy company is recalling dozens of products sold in Florida over serious health risks and concerns, according to a Monday (May 6) announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Palmer Candy Company is recalling its “White Coated Confectionary Items” over potential salmonella contamination. The company was notified about the possible contamination from their liquid coating supplier, who suspects a contaminated ingredient came from another supplier. The FDA is investigating, as well.
The affected products were distributed nationwide in Walmart, Target, Dollar General, HyVee, and sent to distributors in various states. The treats were also packaged in bags, pouches, or tubs. Here's the full list of recalled confections:
Caramel Swirl Pretzels 4 oz. (Best By: 12/28/24)
Caramel Swirl Pretzels 6 oz. (Best By: 12/19/24, 12/20/24, 1/19/25)
Zebra Fudge Cookies 7 oz. (Best By: 3/13/25, 4/1/25 – 4/2/25)
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
No illnesses have been reported as of Monday.
Officials urge consumers to throw away White Coated Confectionary treats and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone with questions about the recall can contact Palmer Candy at 1-800-831-0828. They're available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
