Wilmington came in 4th on the clean list.

Colorado Coalition for the Homeless has repurposed yet another hotel into housing. Renewal Village opened Thursday at 200 W. 48th Ave in Denver. The former Clarion contains 215 rooms. “All Denverites deserve access to safe, stable, and affordable housing,” Mayor Mike Johnston said at the grand opening. “Housing paired with wraparound services, like Renewal Village, provide key support structure to help people successfully transition out of homelessness for good. Projects like this are an important step to creating housing in Denver that is affordable to everyone, but we have much more work to do to close the gap.”

During my childhood, when my family visited relatives “across the river,” in Bayou Plaquemine, Bayou Goula, Caddo, the Pointe, and White Castle, my siblings and I would sometimes race up and down the levees, some distance away from the cows grazing there. At the summit of the hill, you could see the Mississippi River waters through stands of trees and brush. It never occurred to me that our “playground” was the living testimony of Black men, prisoners of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola whom the state of Louisiana had re-enslaved in the convict leasing system.
