INDOT: I-69 Interchange At I-465 On South Side To Open In August

INDIANAPOLIS — A project 20 years in the making will be completed next August as INDOT plans to open the I-69/I-465 interchange on the south side of Indianapolis.

The interchange at Harding Street is the final piece of a puzzle, and the pieces started being put together all the way back in 2004 when the I-69 Finish Line Project was first proposed.

Work on the new interchange began in 2022, which essentially upgraded nearly 30 miles of State Road 37 to interstate standards through Morgan, Johnson, and Marion counties.

The new interchange consists of two flyover ramps connecting I-69 and I-465 just west of the existing State Road 37/Harding Street interchange.

The newly constructed I-69 diverts from the current path of State Road 37 north of Edgewood Avenue. The section of State Road 37 north of State Road 144 will officially become I-69 once the new interchange opens.

The opening of the interchange doesn’t quite mean the end of construction though as INDOT says construction on I-465 around the interchange will continue through the end of 2024.

Interstate 69 is the final interstate to be fully completed ever since interstates first began to be constructed throughout the country in the 1950s under President Eisenhower.

I-69 was designated as part of the “Intermodal Surface and Transportation Efficiency Act” which was passed in the 1990s. It designated an interstate corridor from Port Huron in Canada to Brownsville, Texas. The northern section of I-69 in Indiana was built in the 60s and into the 70s.

The southern section was proposed in 2004 and construction began in 2010. Despite, opposition to some of the proposed route for the interstate, construction delays, and other obstacles, the southern section will be fully up and running by some time in August, says INDOT.
