INDIANAPOLIS –The City of Indianapolis is proposing changes to Georgia Street.

The Department of Metropolitan Development wants to eliminate a lane of traffic between Illinois Street and Capitol Avenue to make it a green space and outdoor event space.

They also plan on rehabilitating two Union Station underpasses, which they say will help maintain and support cultural trail development.

The Indiana Convention Center would also have more space for events. In front of the Indianapolis City-County Council Monday night, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the city plans on using $50 million in TIF money to pay for that along with nine other projects.

“We can keep using our borrowing power to make substantial changes to our downtown while at the same time reserving our budget dollars for neighborhood improvements,” Hogsett said in his budget pitch Monday.

The proposal needs the approval of the City County Council.

In the past, Georgia Street has hosted festivities related to events like the NBA All-Star Game, the Super Bowl, and the Olympic Swimming trials among others.
