INDIANAPOLIS — Warm temperatures will continue today and for the next few days before you feel any relief. Forecasters say that even though it won’t feel as humid today, heat indices will be above 100 degrees in much of Central Indiana.

The hottest temperatures will be in the southeastern part of Central Indiana.

“Muncie to Indianapolis to Terre Haute,” says Mike Ryan of the National Weather Service. “In those locations, we are going to see highs get up into the low and mid-90s, and heat indices are going to peak in the 100-105 degree range.”

More clouds will be north and west of these areas, towards Lafayette and Kokomo, so temperatures will be slightly cooler, ranging from the upper 80s to the lower 90s.

Ryan says the best way to handle the heat is to stay hydrated. He advises drinking plenty of water or other liquids if you’ll be outside.

“When we have higher humidity, our bodies can’t adjust to that, so it feels rather uncomfortable to be outside,” he says.

He says you might get a break from the heat if showers and thunderstorms move through this afternoon.

“We are expecting a good chance to see some scattered showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon, continuing into the early evening,” Ryan says. “That mid-afternoon 3 p.m. timeframe through about 8 o’clock.

Most of the storms won’t be severe. The main concerns are lightning and winds near 60 miles per hour.
