INDIANAPOLIS — Variable speed limits will be implemented on the southeast side of I-465 starting on or after Sept. 10.

These limits will adjust up or down in 5 mph increments based on real-time traffic, weather, and road conditions, aiming to improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

“There’s a lot of speed on I-465,” said Kyleigh Cramer, INDOT’s public relations director. “We are focusing specifically on the southeast side of I-465. We have construction projects within this area and see a lot of speeding.”

Cramer says digital signs are another tool for preventing major accidents. By adjusting speed limits according to current conditions, these signs can help reduce stop-and-go traffic and maintain a more consistent flow.

“It’s working alongside other strategies in this area to reduce speeding and collisions and ensure drivers are aware of their surroundings,” she added.

Drivers will see digital signs placed every half mile along both sides of I-465, displaying the current speed limit. These limits may drop as low as 35 mph in adverse conditions, such as bad weather or heavy traffic, and can increase when conditions improve.

The goal is to provide a smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion. Law enforcement will enforce the posted speed limits, so it’s important for drivers to stay alert and respond to the changing conditions to ensure safer travel for everyone.

Almost a million people and you want us to travel at 45-60 when 70-80 should be the limit why can’t Indiana do the: speed, truck speed, minimum speed thing. Let those slow drivers block the right lane I got to travel 45 mins to work move over!
