WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A motion by the Wichita County District Attorney’s Office to revoke probation of a woman who left children ages 11 months to 7 years alone in a home on North Travis Street has been denied.

Prosecutors said Rebekah Craighead violated her probation on numerous counts, including the use of drugs. She was arrested in April 2024 for the violation .

The motion to revoke the probation, among other violations, states she admitted testing positive for the drug benzodiazepine and did not have a prescription.

It also said she committed a new crime, criminal trespass, last August, failed to report to her probation officer for several months, failed to submit a urine sample, and has remained unemployed.

The 3-year probated sentence for child abandonment was Craighead’s third sentence with probation, with one in 2009 for intent to deliver drugs and one in 2021 for possession of a dangerous drug.

78th District Judge Meredith Kennedy denied the motion to revoke today, July 12, 2024.

However, Craighead signed a plea of true to committing another crime, failing to report and failing to submit a urine sample.

Kennedy ordered the probation to be amended to require Craighead to be confined for treatment in an intermediate sanction facility for 45 to 120 days.

Such facilities serve as an alternative to prison when a probationer or parolee faces a revocation and is established to alleviate prison crowding.

Craighead was also granted permission to travel to Clay County without a work permit to work at a truck stop in Jolly.

Police said she left the children, ages 11 months, five years and seven years, alone in the house in 2021 while she went to another house to take a shower .

The children’s father told police he left his kids with Craighead when he left for work around 6 a.m. An hour later, he found out the kids were alone and without access to a phone in an emergency and called his father to check on them.

When police located Craighead, they said she told them she had been in a hurry to shower at another house.

Craighead has had 15 arrests since 2008, which, besides drugs, include assault, family violence, violation of probation, violation of a protective order, and a charge in Jefferson County, Okla., for DUI.
