WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The tax-free shopping weekend offers consumers an opportunity to save a little money when buying essential summer items, like school supplies and children’s clothing. This year’s sales tax holiday starts on Friday, August 9, and ends on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

During this tax exemption weekend, people can shop for most clothing, shoes, and school supplies free of tax.

A good tip to remember is that any items purchased must be less than $100 in order to qualify. Not all clothing, shoes, and supplies qualify for tax exemption. It is completely up to the retailer to determine what does and does not qualify.

Shoppers can purchase these items in person, online, and over the phone during this holiday. The item(s) must be sold during the holiday period.

Remember that you must have a debit or credit card on hand for those wanting to make a purchase online or by telephone. Additionally, buyers must enter their credit card information before the holiday sale deadline to get the items sales tax-free.

Be mindful of additional charges like delivery, shipping, and handling fees.

For example , you buy a pair of jeans for $95 with a $10 delivery charge for a total price of $105. Because the jeans’ total price is more than $100, tax is due on the entire $105 price.

Sales Tax Holiday Refunds:

If you pay sales tax during this holiday, then you may request a refund from the seller of the tax paid. The seller can either grant the refund or they can provide the customer with Form 00-985, Assignment to Right to Refund (PDF) , which allows the purchaser to file the refund claim directly with the Comptroller’s office .
