Police continue to look for an alleged car thief after a stolen 1987 Chevy Malibu was driven through a fenced back yard near 37th and Rock Road in northeast Wichita. It happened around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The vehicle was stolen from an auto repair shop in Haysville on Monday.  Shop owner Victor Trudo says someone broke a window, took the key and drove off in a car that was being worked on for a client.  However, the vehicle was equipped with an Air Tag tracker, and Trudo says the client called him on Wednesday after getting a hit on the vehicle’s location.

Trudo says he drove to a motel parking lot near 37th and Rock Road, and attempted to block the car with his truck when he found the suspect was turning around in the parking lot.  After he was confronted, the suspect jumped the curb to get away, driving into a residential area, and down a dead-end cul-de-sac.

The suspect then sped through a break in a wooden fence and into a residential back yard, before creating an exit in another part of the fence on the north side, into an open wooded area next to a creek where the car became stuck.

Trudo says the suspect ran off before police could arrive.  Damage estimates to the car and residential property were not available.

Anyone with information about the car theft is asked to contact Haysville Police at (316) 529-5912.
