Update: A 3:30 p.m. Sedgwick County news release on Friday said that 95% of the county’s computer systems are back to normal operation. The county’s treasurer office is back open, but the county’s three tag offices still remain closed as they wait for the state systems to go back online.

A worldwide IT outage caused by a faulty update is impacting several Sedgwick County resources.

CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, said that an update sent to Microsoft computers caused widespread problems that led to grounded flights and disruptions to companies across the world.

United, American and Delta airlines initially grounded all their flights due to the outage. Some airlines have returned in some capacity later Friday , but travelers should expect some delays just in case.

If you are planning on taking a flight out of Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport soon and want to know if it may be impacted by the outage, you should contact your airline. The website FlightAware also has updated information on delayed and canceled flights out of Wichita.

The county’s vehicle tagging offices are currently closed due to computer problems.

“The computers are back up with county software but unfortunately the motor vehicle system is on the state software, and at this moment the state has not gotten their stuff up and running,” Brandi Baily, the county’s treasurer, said at Friday morning’s county commissioners agenda review meeting. “The plan is to keep the tag office doors closed until we have that up and running.”

All Kansas drivers license offices are also closed for the rest of the day , according to a Kansas Department of Revenue social media post.

KanDrive’s live streaming tool, which is used to track traffic conditions in Kansas, is also currently unavailable.

Are Sedgwick County government services available?

During Friday’s agenda review meeting, Sedgwick County shared that roughly 75%-80% of the county’s work stations were impacted by the Microsoft update , which happened about 11:30 on Thursday night.

Mike Elpers, chief information officer with Sedgwick County, said the first priority is public safety.

“We’ve gotten several locations back up and running of those public safety, the EMS posts, the fire stations ... the jail, we’ve focused on the operations at the main court house for the courts and the district attorney,” Elpers said. “We’ve leveraged some IT staff in some of our COMMCare department, and some of our health department and our corrections department. [Our] departmental staff ... have really stepped up to help us as well.”

Sedgwick County says all 911 communications are operational.

Additionally, if you have an appointment at the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department, it will be rescheduled until systems are working again.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
