Local law enforcement endorses Merrin for Congress
Local law enforcement groups are supporting state Rep. Derek Merrin (R., Monclova Township) in the race for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District seat. Both the Toledo Police Command Officers Association and Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association have endorsed the candidate against his opponent, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo). “Every day Toledo police officers, commanders put their lives on the line to protect and to serve our community,” Mr. Merrin said. “They deserve our gratitude, but they also merit our vocal support.” He condemned Ms. Kaptur’s support and co-sponsorship of the 2021 End Qualified Immunity Act which would have eliminated individual liability of police officers. In 1967, the Supreme Court invented the qualified immunity doctrine that prevents police officers from being sued for misconduct if they break the law. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives but was not passed.

Streetsboro puts brakes on solar panel ban
A potential year-long ban on solar panels in Streetsboro is headed back to committee after a debate over whether to exclude residential properties from the moratorium. The moratorium came up for second reading before Streetsboro City Council, prompting debate over various versions of the ban. Councilmembers discussed the original ordinance, which was recommended by the city's planning commission in June; an amendment suggested by Law Director Paul Janis that would allow residential solar panels, but only if they are mounted on houses; and an amendment suggested by Councilwoman Lisa McDaniel, which would allow ground mounted panels on residential properties as well as those on rooftops.

Hahn Professor of Law and co-director of the Law-Medicine Center, said that overlapping surgeries are tricky to regulate, noting it’s difficult to define the “critical portion” of all surgeries because there are so many types of procedures. Letting trainees perform non-critical tasks, like opening and closing incisions, also allows surgeons to treat more patients, Hoffman said.

Hahn Professor of Law and co-director of the Law-Medicine Center, shared some ways obesity can affect an individual’s ability to work and earn a living. “Workers with obesity often face discrimination in the workplace,” she said. “Unfortunately, obesity on its own is not considered a protected classification under the Americans with Disabilities Act or any other anti-discrimination law.
