Tree-kangaroos the focus of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo research
The Cleveland Metroparks’ Zoo Science research team presented overviews and outcomes on their projects to the Board of Park Commissioners on July 18. Research curators and zoo scientists Noah Dunham and Diana Koester spoke to the board about several long-term projects their team has been working on. Koester described a recent project studying Matschie’s tree kangaroos, a species native to Southeast Asia whose population has been experiencing difficulty breeding. Koester said research showed the breeding troubles came from the kangaroo population becoming too overweight. So, the research team “overhauled the entire set of diet recommendations for all zoos feeding this species,” according to Koester, “and we continue to work with this species supporting the zoos as they transition over to this diet.”

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- City Council approved legislation Monday (July 22) to regulate the use of homes for short-term rentals, such as those connected with Airbnb. The city already had regulations for long-term rentals on its books, but has now added such regulations for rentals of up to 30 days.
Kommuna Lux music group to perform July 30
Kommuna Lux, a Ukrainian music group, will perform in Cleveland on July 30 at the Beachland Ballroom located at 15711 Waterloo Road in Cleveland. Kommuna Lux features Vova Gitin, a Jewish clarinetist, and its repertoire includes songs that tell the story of Odesa, a historic city that was recently attacked. For its concerts, Kommuna Lux has partnered with the Rotary Club in Kyiv as part of its Hospital Beds for Kramatorsk project. A portion of the donations collected at shows will fund new beds for victims of severe burns at several Ukrainian hospitals. The rest of the funds will go towards medicine and protective equipment for organizations across Ukraine.
