    New overnight shelter opens in Wilkes-Barre

    WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new overnight shelter in Luzerne County has officially opened its doors.

    The new Keystone Mission overnight shelter will help dozens get off the streets and back on their feet.

    The shelter opened today on 90 East Union Street in Wilkes-Barre.

    The overnight shelter will be open from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. each day replacing the code blue shelter that operated during the cold winter months.

    The shelter will be able to provide overnight services for more than 50 people.

    “We will have a place for 50 homeless people to come, every night. In the wintertime, it will be heated, in the summertime, like today, it will be air-conditioned. And still, a place to take a shower get cleaned up apply for identification cards and other things,” Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown said.

    Funding for the shelter was made possible through a grant from the city’s American Rescue Plan funds.
