WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Wilkes-Barre City Police Department has put out a warning about a rental scam in the Diamond City involving gift cards.

According to Wilkes-Barre police, scam artists are advertising apartments for rent in the city and asking prospective tenants to fill out a lease agreement. Once the paperwork has been filled out and sent back, the suspects ask for payment via Apple gift cards.

Submit a Tip to the I-Team

Victims are then asked to send pictures of the cards and security codes to these individuals. The victims then show up at the apartments only to find they are already rented out and occupied.

“Please beware of these potential scams. You should see the apartment before any “money” changes hands and verify the rental is legitimate,” police wrote in a press release.
