WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A delayed Juneteenth celebration kicked off at Wilkes University Thursday night.

Juneteenth is observed nationwide as a federal holiday on June 19, but the original event was postponed because of extreme heat.

Wilkes University hosted its fourth annual LitFest, sponsored by the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing.

The event celebrates the written word and features literary readings and book signings from program alumni, faculty, and guest artists.

The week-long event featured Juneteenth celebrations along with local black authors.

“I kinda wonder sometimes is anyone reading anymore can anyone hold a thought long enough to pick up a book and here we are sitting under a tent listening to people read it’s just so inspiring,” said author Shawn Amos.

The week-long event wrapped up tonight with book signings and a guest speaker.
