WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s Independence Day and one classic celebration is well underway in Luzerne County.

Wilkes Barre’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration is happening at Kirby Park and the event has a little something for everyone.

“Well we’re celebrating the birthday of America, 2024,” said City of Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown.

It’s an annual celebration for people of all ages: The Old-Fashioned Fourth of July.

“We just came ’cause we just saw this and we’re gonna go on some rides and do fun games,” said Kingston resident Arielle McClintock.

“And we’re here to have fun a lot of fun with my sister so we’re going to go on every ride,” April McClintock added.

What will the weather be like for tonight’s fireworks?

With games, rides, live music, and more than 40 food and craft vendors, there’s no shortage of excitement.

“Tonight, we have the Philharmonic playing and then the best fireworks display in the state of Pennsylvania will be put on tonight,” Mayor Brown explained.

For many people, the Old-Fashioned Fourth is a fun family tradition.

“My niece and nephew come down ride the rides good food down here firework display is amazing and it’s just a good time to celebrate America’s birthday,” Corey Watkins from Edwardsville said.

There is a road closure to be aware of as the Market Street Bridge will be closed to vehicle travel on Thursday, July 4th between 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 pm.

The much-anticipated fireworks show will begin sometime between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

There is still lots of time to get in on the action at Kirby Park.
